Weights and dimensions of the two cameras are as follows: The Hero also adds a Micro-HDMI port for direct connection to a TV or monitor - something not present on the smaller Hero5 Session.īoth cameras feature a waterproof body able to operate safely at depths of up to 33 feet without the need for a separate underwater housing. The Hero5 Session, however, is more flexible when it comes to mounting as it can fit into (slightly) smaller spaces and weighs a little less.īoth cameras are pretty small, so GoPro clearly feels the extra usability of the touchscreen is worth more to the average user than having the smallest possible action camera. The built-in touch screen makes the Hero much easier to use than the Hero5 Session, especially for beginners, and it doesn’t rely so heavily on the smartphone app for control and reviewing footage. This change in design lowers the price bar to the ‘full’ GoPro touch screen experience but leaves fans of the smaller model without an equivalent replacement in GoPro’s new line up. The GoPro Hero is a much larger device than the Hero5 Session it replaces, abandoning the trademark cuboid proportions of the screenless Session range in favour of the rectangular design of the more expensive Hero5 Black and Hero6 Black models with their built-in two-inch touch screens. GoPro Hero Vs GoPro Hero5 Session: Design & Dimensions The Hero5 Session is no longer available directly from GoPro, but can still be purchased from retailers such as Amazon, where it can often be found at a discounted price while stocks are still available. Although, I preferred the standard bar mount for the majority of my rides.įinally, I was impressed by the video quality and the ease with which I was able to cut the video and then share on social media or download to my smartphone.Launching at $199, the new Hero matches the Hero5 Session on price, maintaining the entry price point to the GoPro range. The various mount options mean that you can get numerous shots from different angles. The camera charged quickly and once I downloaded the GoPro App to my smartphone it was genuinely straight forward and didn't take long for me to get out on the road. In short, once familiar with the camera, it was really easy to use and I could be confident that a good quality video or photo would be shot. The experienceĪs someone who is relatively new to using action cameras I was interested to see how intuitive setting up and using the GoPro Hero4 Session would be. However, if you are looking for a high end action camera which is robust, light, and user friendly, it is competitively priced- for example Garmin's latest Virb XE has a RRP of £319.99. However, after some practice this was no longer a problem.Īt £249.99 the Hero4 Session is unquestionably an expensive piece of kit. I would press the button intending to shoot a video but would accidentally take multiple photos. Pressing it again stops the camera and turns the power off.Īt the outset I had a few teething problems. You press it once to turn on the camera which starts the camera rolling for video or press and hold for time lapse shots. The camera is operated using one main button. > What is the drag penalty when using an action camera? One button control One criticism, although not really a problem for me, is that if the battery runs down you can't swap it out for an alternative half way through a ride. I used it in fairly warm weather and found that the battery lasted consistently over 90 minutes but relying on it to last for two hours might be a bit optimistic. The Hero4 Session has a built in battery which is claimed to provide up to two hours of recording when fully charged, but may be less depending on the settings chosen and the temperature.
